Women and Heart Disease

Heart Disease has long been thought of as a man’s disease. The typical heart attack patient has been envisioned as an out of shape middle aged man, “a heart attack waiting to happen.”

We now know that this is not the whole story. Cardiac Disease is the #1 killer of women as well as men in this country. Women have 10 times the chance of dying from heart disease than breast cancer. Heart Disease takes more lives of women than all the cancers combined. It can have a subtle presentation, a woman's heart attack may not look like what we have come to expect to see.

The American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health are both focusing on Women and Heart Disease this year. These links to their websites can provide a lot of information about Women and Heart Disease.
